Major GPA calculator
Your major GPA uses only the courses that count toward your major: add up grade points × credits for those courses and divide by their credits. Your overall GPA uses every graded course. Check the box on each major course to see both side by side.
Worked example
A psychology student has five 3-credit courses:
- Major: Intro to Psychology A (4.0), Research Methods B+ (3.3), Statistics B (3.0)
- Other: English Comp A- (3.7), Biology C+ (2.3)
Major GPA: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0) × 3 ÷ 9 = 3.43.
Overall GPA: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.7 + 2.3) × 3 ÷ 15 = 3.26.
Common major GPA requirements

Typical values only. Your department sets the actual rules.
Frequently asked questions
What is a major GPA?
Your major GPA is the GPA of only the courses that count toward your major. Many departments require a minimum major GPA, often 2.0 to 2.5, to graduate or stay in the program.
Which courses count toward my major GPA?
Usually the required and elective courses in your major department, and sometimes required courses from other departments. Your degree audit or advisor has the exact list.
Do employers and grad schools look at major GPA?
Some do. A strong major GPA can help if your overall GPA is lower, so it is fine to list both on a resume when the major GPA is higher.
Do Pass/Fail major courses count?
P, NP and W grades are left out of the GPA here. Many majors do not allow Pass/Fail for required courses, so check your department rules.
How is a minor GPA calculated?
The same way. Check the box for your minor courses instead of your major courses to see your minor GPA.
